English Viola made circa 1740 - LOB 14 7/8"
An interesting English Voila made circa 1740. The original neck has been extended to a length more consistent with modern instruments. There are a few, sound, old repaired cracks to the table. It has a wonderful lustrous varnish, and a striking two piece back.
The instrument has not been shortened. It bears a label for "Gilkes 1820". It is nicely set-up with rosewood fittings and is very straight-forward to play. It's even across the strings, and has a rich, mellow sound that projects well.
